The thing that sticks out about this story from the Daily News - which, it should be noted, has consistently solid coverage of companion animal issues - isn't that a house was hit twice by different reckless drivers. Bad drivers are a dime a dozen, and nothing a motorist does in this city should surprise anyone.
What I noticed is this passage:
Amazingly, no one was hurt, except possibly Manolatos' cat, Nala, which was taken to the vet with breathing trouble.
That's it. The story pays as much attention to a damaged vintage car in the garage than to the "possible" injury suffered by the family pet, which is treated as an aside.
Is Nala "no one" to the Manolatos family? It may seem like quibbling, but this is exactly the type of "speciesism" that reduces animals to property - or, in this case, punchlines.
