New York, New York, is, of course, one of the most populous cities on earth. And among us 17 million-plus humans there lives another population of untold numbers - a population some consider no less important - our companion animals.
Since many New Yorkers value our animal friends as much as - and in some cases more so than - we do other people, our great city needs a comprehensive resource for pet related news, goods and services.
That's where Poop City comes in - or will try to.
Poop City (if you have a pet, the name needs no explanation) stems in part from my frustration in trying to locate a veterinarian for an urgent situation involving my cat, Pig (if you know Pig, the name needs no explanation). As a new resident of the city, I had to rely on the Internet rather than word of mouth, and what little information I could find was scattered and, for my taste, incomplete.
What I hope to establish with this blog is a safe harbor for New York pet guardians - an aggregator of relevant tips and recommendations, so that fewer people will face uncertainties in providing for their animal friends.
Another component of this site will be the reporting, and repeating, of news regarding incidents of cruelty and neglect. Though unpleasant and often hard to take, turning away never helps.
Finally, I will devote as much time and space as possible to the promotion of spay, neuter and adoption efforts across the city.
I will try not to get bogged down by semantics. For example, I will use the terms "pet" and "companion animal" interchangeably. However, there are no "owners" here, only caretakers and guardians.
Other decisions will be made as need be.
And away we go...
